2006 Tour Kicked off in New York City

The blog is back! For the next month, I will be blogging about my adventure in a Toyota hybrid vehicle visiting public lands from New York City to San Francisco...and everywhere in between! At 11 sites, we will be presenting a $1,000 grant to the site for public lands improvements on National Public Lands Day, September 30th!

Last year, I blogged while I was on the California Public Lands Tour where I visited 10 sites in California and presented them with $1,000 grants as well.

The 2006 version of the National Public Lands Tour presented by Toyota Motor Sales, USA., Inc got kicked off yesterday at Washington Square Park in New York City. Washington Square is a large neighborhood park located on the campus of New York University in lower Manhatten. Toyota employees from the New York office have been going to these types of parks for several years for volunteer efforts such as National Public Lands Day.

A $1,000 grant was presented to Partnership for Parks yesterday at Washington Square Park. Partnerships works to increase community support for and involvement in parks throughout New York City. Founded in 1995, Partnerships works to start, strengthen, and support neighborhood park groups; to link these groups together so that they can learn from each other and become stronger collectively; and to promote involvement in parks so people will join in efforts to restore and preserve them.

A new partner to the Public Lands Day Tour this year is Travelocity. They are helping make travel arrangements during the trip. In addition, at several of the sites, the Travelocity Gnome will be making public apperences. If you look in the above photo, you can see how happy the Partnerships staffer is to be with the Gnome!

Check out www.publiclandsday.org for more details and full schedule of the 2006 Public Lands Day Tour as well as other info regarding National Public Lands Day. There are currently 800 sites registered for National Public Lands Day this year.

Next stop is Valley Forge National Historic Site on Friday, September 1st.
