Milwaukee Community Service Corps

Wow! What a great day. I headed to central Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was floored by my experience. It was a typical Thursday afternoon around 3:00pm and car after car was driving up to pick up rain barrels that the Milwaukee Community Service Corps (MCSC) had created. These barrels, mostly from local breweries, were being sold like hotcakes and will be used to capture rainwater from people's homes to prevent excess runoff. I like the way Milwaukeeans recycle! It's all about the BEER in these parts.

After meeting with several of the crew members and the staff at MCSC, I couldn't have thought of a more deserving recipient of an NPLD Tour Grant. Not only do they supplement the citizens of Milwaukee with rain barrels for 30 bucks each, they have work crews that they send all over their community to make public land improvements including landscaping, trail work, tree planting, and keeping the shores of Lake Michigan invasive seaweed free.

I could tell the crew members all loved what they were doing and they all appreciated that they were given an opportunity to learn some trades that they could take with them into the workforce. To top it off, the Executive Director of MCSC has been educating them the importance of the Civilian Conservation Corps as well as the basic principles of conservation and sustainable living. Like I said. I was blown away.

The MCSC will be working on tree plantings on National Public Lands Day to commemorate the Civilian Conservation Corps as well as various other projects.
