Working Forum on Children & Nature - Nebraska City, NE

After Iowa, I took a brief detour from the NPLD Tour and stopped in Nebraska City, Nebraska at the Arbor Day Farm for the Working Forum on Children and Nature. Connecting children to nature has been a hot topic lately and by good means. Every year, children all over the world and becoming more connected with television, video games, computers, and other electronic devices and less connected to nature. Children are not playing outdoors as much as they used to and this trend leads to several negative trends including childhood obesity and social skills. In addition, there are clear links to a disconnection with nature and educational development.

The forum discussed many of these issues and what steps leaders in the educational field are taking to make positive progress. I learned quite a bit and hope to translate it to work we do at National Public Lands Day and National Environmental Education Foundation.
