After a quick trip to Torrance to visit Toyota once again, I pointed my Toyota Prius north and headed to San Francisco. I was to visit Golden Gate National Recreation Area to present two $1,000 grants. One grant was to be given to the Golden Gate Parks Conservancy and the other to the San Francisco Neighborhood Parks Council.
On my way up, I decided to take the scenic route along Pacific Coast Highway. After stopping in Ventura for my only gas fill of the trip, I soon found my way along one of the most spectacular drives in my life. The entire journey along the Pacific Coast Highway traverses along the steep cliffs that plunge into the Pacific Ocean. Looking the other direction are huge mountains. Heading north with a near full moon in my rear view, I stopped in Big Sur for a halfway point of my drive and spent the night.
The following day, I headed to Chrissy Field Center located within Golden Gate NRA to present the grants. Upon my arrival, I noticed volunteers already gathering for the event. After I parked the Prius, many people gawked and awed as well as asked questions about the fuel efficiency and GPS system. I gave many a tour of the vehicle and I think a few have become Hybrid converts!
I presented two checks to two different organizations. Golden Gate NRA will have three areas in the park participating on National Public Lands Day on the 24th. Brooks Park and Lafayette Park are community parks in the city of San Francisco and they will be participating too. I presented a check of $1,000 to the San Francisco Neighborhood Council to split between the two parks.
I’m glad to have met representatives from the San Francisco Neighborhood Council as I learned that they work with over 138 parks and gardens in the San Francisco Area. The National Public Lands Day Program is trying to expand to urban areas and we are looking for more groups like this. If you are interested in getting involved email me at Hampton@neetf.org.
That’s it for now. My next stop is Bay Model Visitor Center in Sausalito. If you live in the San Francisco/Sausalito area come on out!!
