September 23 - Santa Monica National Recreation Area

Today I drove about an hour up the 405 to the city of Thousand Oaks, California which hosts the Santa Monica National Recreation Area Visitor Center. I spent a good amount of time there learning about the ecosystem of the park and the recreational opportunities from the Park Volunteer Coordinator, Mike Malone. I also had the opportunity to meet several of the volunteers including a mountain biker volunteer named Lance. He even wore a yellow jersey!

A large gathering came together under the canopy that was purchased using the $1,000 grant Toyota donated. The canopy can be used year round to help coordinate volunteers, give volunteers a place in the shade, and act as a general meeting place for things like registration and lunch. We hope that we see the canopy tent up for several more NPLDs to come!

I didn't have an opportunity to stick around and go mountain biking with Lance or try to find another Bobcat or Mountain Lion since I had to pick my wife, Jessica up at the airport and I knew that traffic would be really bad. Before I left though, Mike Malone showed me two of the Toyota Rav4 Electric Vehicles Toyota donated to Santa Monica NRA a couple years ago. They were VERY cool and what a great paint job!

Tommorrow is the big day at Seal Beach. Stay tuned for that update! Until then!
